Opel Grandland gets GSe model

New Opel Grandland GSe is a 300hp, four-wheel drive plug-in hybrid.

Opel is re-launching its top-spec plug-in hybrid Grandland crossover with a new badge - GSe. Opel confirmed last month that the classic GSE badge would make a comeback as a sub-brand for high-performance electric and plug-in models.

Twin-motor all-wheel drive

GSE originally stood for Grand Sport Einspritzung (Grand Sport Injection for the non-Germanic among you) and now stands for Grand Sport Electric. For the Grandland, that means the return of the 300hp, twin-motor, all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid model. That was previously sold in the pre-facelift Grandland lineup but without any special model designation.

Special Koni dampers

To cope with the extra 75hp over the standard Grandland PHEV model, the Grandland GSe gets specially tuned and stiffened suspension, featuring retuned steering and new dampers designed by suspension specialists Koni. These are FSD (or Frequency Selective Damping) units, which according to Opel: "enables different damping characteristics for handling versus comfort. As a result, the Grandland GSe responds immediately and predictably to every driver input while retaining Opel's typical stability under braking, in corners and on the Autobahn."

Outside, there are GSe-specific 19-inch alloy wheels, a new rear diffuser, and an optional black bonnet. Inside are Alcantara-trimmed bucket seats approved by the AGR, the German bad back association, and GSe logos scattered about. Sadly, it also looks like the Grandland GSe sticks with the frustrating old-school infotainment system, but you can't have everything we suppose.

Exceptionally dynamic

Opel hasn't issued an electric-only range for the Grandland GSe, but it uses the same 13kWh battery as the standard model, so it should be in the same 62km ballpark. The GSe claims an overall fuel economy of 1.3 litres per 100km on the combined WLTP cycle and has CO2 emissions of between 29 and 31g/km. The top speed is 235km/h, and will hit 100km/h from a standstill in 6.1 seconds.

"The new Opel Grandland GSe is exceptionally dynamic, capable and stylish. We are confident that it will attract customers who want not only electrification from their SUV, but also a sporty drive," said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.
