Jeep shows mild-hybrid Renegade and Compass

Jeep has announced new mild-hybrid versions of its Renegade and Compass SUVs.

Jeep has announced new mild-hybrid versions of its Renegade and Compass SUVs as part of its plan to electrify its product line-up.

The new e-Hybrid models will go on sale alongside the plug-in hybrid 4xe versions of the same vehicles, which, the company says, already make up 25 per cent of its sales in Europe. They are also due to be joined next summer by a 4xe plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

New engine

The Renegade and Compass e-Hybrids share the same powertrain and are both equipped with a new turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine developing 130hp. That's sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Also at play is a 20hp electric motor, which, as well as helping to reduce fuel consumption by a claimed 15 per cent compared to previous petrol-only models, can allow the vehicle to operate at low speeds for very short distances on electric power only, such as on start-up, when parking or in stop-go traffic. Some regenerative braking capability allows the new Jeep e-Hybrid models to recover kinetic energy lost during deceleration or braking, too, making the whole car more efficient.

Staying connected

Inside, the Renegade and Compass both feature an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, although the Compass can be specified with a bigger 10.1-inch unit. A full range of connected services are available enabling drivers to monitor their car remotely, receive alerts in the event of theft, enjoy a smoother, better-integrated navigation system (says Jeep) and create an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot capable of supporting up to eight devices.

Standard safety and driver assistance kit on the new models includes traffic sign recognition, the ability for the vehicle to keep itself within the speed limit, Drowsy Driver Alert, automatic emergency braking and an adaptive cruise control system with lane centring, allowing the car to automatically adjust its speed and direction when travelling on a motorway.

Upland trim

Upland is a new trim level that will be available on the new models incorporating bespoke aesthetic details as well as making use of an array of eco-friendly materials such as interior furnishings made from recycled fishing nets, other plastics derived from recycled headlamp units and eco-friendly bronze paint used for interior accents. Exclusive to Upland models is a new blue colour, Matter Azur, and all feature a contrasting black roof and gloss black alloy wheels (17-inch on the Renegade, 18-inch on the Compass). Upland spec will also become available on Renegade and Compass 4xe models.

As of yet, Irish specs and pricing for the new Jeep Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid models have not been confirmed.
