New three-wheeled Morgan spotted testing

The 3 Wheeler will return.

Morgan has confirmed that it is currently developing a new three-wheeled model to replace the 3 Wheeler, production of which ends this year.

The company had previously said that the 3 Wheeler would return, and it has just released photographs of a disguised new three-wheeled model which appeared to be undergoing on-track durability testing.

Although Morgan has revealed very little, it has said that the new model will use a naturally-aspirated three-cylinder Ford engine. The company has used Ford engines in its cars, including three-wheelers, on and off since the early 1930s.

The 3 Wheeler, introduced in 2011, proved something of an unexpected hit for Morgan, the Malvern-based company not having built a three-wheeled car since the Ford-engined F-Series of 1952. The outgoing model is powered by a 1,983cc V-Twin engine built by American motorcycle engine manufacturer, S&S.

According to Morgan: "The vehicle will take inspiration from the many owners of the outgoing model that have embraced adventure travel and touring, and whose incredible journeys have reached all corners of the globe."

Is that a hint that the next 3 Wheeler will come with a roof and a few more creature comforts?

According to Steve Morris, Chairman and CEO of Morgan:

"We are thrilled to confirm plans for an all-new three-wheeled Morgan, a model that continues an incredible story dating back to 1909. The outgoing 3 Wheeler was adored by customers and enthusiasts alike, and will inspire this next generation. The upcoming model is an all-new ground-up design and the first whole vehicle programme to be completed under the stewardship of Investindustrial. Morgan's team of engineers and designers have considered everything that the company has learnt from the decade of building and selling the previous model. We look forward to sharing more about this exciting new vehicle in due course."
