First impressions: Ford Focus ST TDCi diesel

Published on January 19, 2015

This new generation Focus ST comes with the option of petrol or diesel power so we opted for a diesel estate as our first test car at the international launch in Barcelona. In grey. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's pretty camouflaged today in Spain in the murky weather.

Anyway, first impressions. Read the vital stats below, as they're important, but they don't tell the full story. Press the engine start button and a promising grumble comes from the exhaust instead of the standard diesel rattle. Indeed, Ford has brilliantly isolated the diesel engine sound from the cabin. On top of that, some clever noise engineering means it sounds surprisingly similar to the petrol-powered model when you're pushing it hard. It certainly sounds sporty.

And while revs run out quicker than in a petrol car, there's so much torque available that you don't feel the need for more power at the top end. Admittedly, because of the slippery conditions, we didn't get a chance to truly test the outer edges of the car's performance envelope, but it was enough to realise that the diesel version is no slouch.

What the low-grip roads did allow us to do was experience the stability control systems at work at relatively low speeds. Understeer is the order of the day if you carelessly mash the throttle on the exit of a tight (and soaking wet) corner, but there's delicacy to the chassis too that we'll explore more tomorrow. Switching the ESC system into Sport makes for a smoother and more rewarding experience in these conditions. At least the steering offers up some decent feedback - for an electric assistance system.

Looking forward to trying the petrol version tomorrow - and the forecast is better...
