New open-top Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder can do 324km/h, 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Lamborghini has taken the top off the Huracán, added the word 'Spyder' to its name and given us a classic, jaw-dropping supercar show-stopper. This 324km/h roadster is wowing the crowds at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Exterior

Aside from the roof, the Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder is the same as its coupé sibling, so edgy, aggressive and utterly divine. The electrohydraulic soft-top is the new part of the car and it can be lowered or raised on the move at speeds up to 50km/h. When folded away, it sits neatly in a space in the middle of the car, so there's none of that fiddly nonsense you used to get on Lamborghini convertibles. The rear window of the car can be opened and shut independently of the hood, so owners can use it as a wind deflector top down or an 'amplifier of the unique engine sound of the naturally aspirated V10' roof up. We like the sound of that.

Lamborghini has also developed a pair of movable fins (invisible until the hood is down), an integrated duct and lateral wind guards to keep the cabin as comfortable as possible when enjoying the Spyder's blue skies USP. On the structural front, the Huracán Spyder is 40 per cent stiffer than the old Gallardo; it possesses 50 per cent more downforce, while at 1,542kg it has a power-to-weight ratio of 396hp-per-tonne.

Pick the fabric roof in black, brown or red, while there are 11 exterior colours. The Ad Personam programme offers further options here, including five matte finishes. LED lights front and rear, and 20-inch Giano wheels, complete the look.

Interior

Standard equipment includes the new Lamborghini Infotainment System II, which comes with the 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster as seen elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group. Alcantara and fine nappa leather makes for a sumptuous cabin, while an ECU for the electric seats ensure that they cannot be adjusted to rest on the engine bulkhead; clever, eh? Also offered is an optional Sensonum high-end sound system.

Mechanicals

It's the 5.2-litre V10 as found in the hard-top Huracán but there are some new additions on the Spyder... that will, admittedly, make their way into the rest of the Huracán range in 2016. These are stop-start technology (yes, on a V10 Lambo) and cylinder on demand - meaning the Spyder can run on just five cylinders when driving demands are minimal.

Still, enough of the eco-nonsense. What you have here is 610hp at 8,250rpm and 560Nm at 6,500rpm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed Lamborghini dual-clutch gearbox. Such firepower makes for explosive performance: 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds (just 0.2 seconds down on the Huracán coupé), 0-200km/h is ripped off in 10.2 seconds and the top speed is 324km/h. Must you really know the economy and emissions figures? You must? Oh, all right then: 12.3 litres/100km (23mpg) and 285g/km CO2.

The Anima mode select driving switch is present on the steering wheel, while carbon-ceramic brakes are standard fit. Buyers can also opt for the variable Lamborghini Dynamic Steering and magnetorheological dampers.

Anything else?

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, said: "The Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder is the next chapter in the success story of the naturally aspirated V10 Huracán, and continues a Lamborghini tradition of open air motoring. The Huracán Spyder combines the innovation, performance and appeal of the Huracán coupé, with new technologies and an added emotional dimension. Its predecessor, the Gallardo Spyder, was the best-selling open top model in Lamborghini's history: we expect the Huracán Spyder to exceed its predecessor in every way."
Customer deliveries will begin in spring 2016 and the car costs €186,450 plus taxes.
