Longtail McLaren has 40 per cent more downforce

McLaren 675LT generates more grip than 650S due to longer back end.

The teasing of the forthcoming McLaren 675LT (for Longtail) goes on, with a glimpse of its extended rear end released ahead of its full reveal at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

As we already know, this road-going supercar uses a nickname for the longer version of the iconic McLaren F1 GTR racer of the late 1990s and makes 675hp from its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine - an increase of 25hp over the 650S. Well, McLaren has now revealed that backing up that headline horsepower is a torque figure of 700Nm (up from 678Nm in the 650S) produced from 5,500- to 6,500rpm, though that's limited to 600Nm in first gear to ensure the LT can find some traction. These increased output figures are thanks to new turbos for the V8 and the use of lightweight components elsewhere in the engine.

Meanwhile, the iconic 'LT' part of its name also brings some driving improvements over the 650S, as the 'Active Longtail Airbrake' (i.e., the longer back end of the car) increases downforce by 40 per cent. Its design optimises performance and reduces weight, which is another pillar of the LT's ethos.

Anything else?

The 675LT also has a redesigned crossover titanium exhaust-system, which you can hear if you watch the teaser video below. More details on the car will be made public when it makes its first full appearance in Geneva - we can't wait.
