Ordinarily when we talk about driverless cars the name Google comes to mind, but the technology powerhouse is not the only company working on autonomous vehicles. There are some car makers looking into it too.
One of those is Audi, which, next Sunday (October 19), will put its driverless technology to the ultimate test - can it lap a race circuit as quickly as a car piloted by a professional racing driver?
The car in question is the RS 7 Sportback and it will take to the Hockenheim track in Germany as part of the DTM season finale. Bizarrely, the RS 7 concept, which has been outfitted with more computers and gizmos than your average Harvey Norman's, is being called a 'piloted driving' car, which reminds us of the whole flammable/inflammable debate, but the car will drive itself around the track with, as Audi says,' millimetre precision' at speeds of up to 240km/h and, it is hoped, will complete the lap in just over two minutes - a similar time posted by pro in the same car.
Audi describes the driverless RS 7 as a technology demonstrator, to show off the potential of the technologies that the bods in Ingolstadt have been working on and which will come to some of its products in time.
