Camouflaged test cars show off enlarged Opel Insignia Grand Sport, due at Geneva 2017.

What's the news?

Underneath all this garish camouflage is our first clear indication of the appearance of the second-generation Opel Insignia, undergoing its final testing before its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2017.

Calling it the Insignia Grand Sport, it's clear to see that the D-segment challenger from Opel continues the 'fastback' look of the preceding car, albeit the coupe-like roof has been accentuated.

That's because the Insignia Grand Sport is bigger in most dimensions than its predecessor. The wheelbase, for instance, has been stretched by more than 90mm, even though the Insignia's overall shipping length has grown by only 55mm (thank short front and rear overhangs for that). The track is 10mm wider and the only size stat that has seen a reduction is the height, as the roofline is 30mm lower than before.

Best news of all, though, is that despite this physical growth, the new Insignia - like the Astra which won European Car of the Year 2016 - has been on a strict diet, meaning models can be up to 175kg trimmer than the old version. Opel promises 'optimised' packaging and a roomier interior within, as well as plenty of technology options.

Anything else?

"The name Opel Insignia Grand Sport says it all," said Opel Group CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann. "It reflects the efficient dynamics of a Monza Concept as much as it does our pride in the magnificent Opel classics Kapitan, Admiral and Diplomat. Our future flagship represents a new dimension - elegance, lightness and sportiness blend to create an extremely attractive combination."
