More power and chassis tweaks for top-spec Tesla electric saloon.

A new range-topping variant has been added to the Tesla Model 3 line-up in the shape of a new Performance spec. The newcomer is the most powerful Model 3 yet, plus it's been given a range of chassis tweaks that are designed to boost the car's handling, as well as a unique look to differentiate it from the rest of the facelifted Model 3 range. It’s ready to configure on the Tesla Ireland website.

Powerful two-motor set-up

The Model 3 Performance comes with a twin-motor system for four-wheel drive, while system power is rated at up to 460hp. This gives the car a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.1 seconds, and a top speed of 262km/h. As well as having more power, the new Performance has been refined to deliver improved efficiency when compared with the previous Performance model, although a range of 528km on the WLTP test cycle is 101km shorter than for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version of the Model 3.

Adaptive suspension is fitted as standard to the Performance variant and comes as part of the Model 3's integrated ‘Vehicle Dynamics Controller’. This has a bespoke tune for the Performance model, and Tesla claims that it's able to deliver "the ultimate handling performance without giving up everyday usability".

Within the Model 3's electronics, the Performance gains ‘Track Mode V3’, the latest version of its dynamic electronic chassis control system. This optimises the powertrain for performance driving, while the car's handling balance, stability control and regenerative braking can all be adjusted via the Model 3's 15-inch touchscreen.

The rest of the chassis has been upgraded, too, with added rigidity, firmer springs, stiffer anti-roll bars and “performance bushings” that are designed to improve the car's responses, while the brakes are said to be "track ready" with high-performance pads fitted to the red calipers (an exclusive addition for the Performance model) that should deliver faster deceleration and more consistent performance at higher temperatures. The Model 3 Performance also receives new 20-inch 'Warp' five-spoke alloy wheels in black and performance tyres (although no brand has been confirmed) and these come with a wider offset to further boost cornering and traction.

Sportier looks

The most recent update to the Model 3 introduced a new front end inspired by the look of the forthcoming Tesla Roadster, and the Performance model adds more aggressive styling. The nose has been reprofiled with extra cooling ducts, while at the rear there's a carbon-fibre spoiler for the boot lid and a diffuser that helps to smooth airflow under the car.

The interior benefits from new sports seats with improved side bolstering for additional lateral support, although comfort is still on offer with the option of seat heating and ventilation. The other addition to the minimalist cabin is carbon-fibre-effect trim on the dashboard.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance is available to order now, with Irish prices starting from €55,890, which is a €6,900 premium over the next Model 3 in the line-up, the Long Range All-Wheel Drive. First deliveries are expected in the summer, but you never do know with Tesla...
