Ten electrified Skoda models to debut in the next five years.

What's the news?

Skoda has launched its new iV sub-brand as part of a €2 billion investment in electrification over the next five years. The first model to arrive under this new plan is a fully electric version of the compact Skoda Citigo, called the Citigo E iV. The iV name is a combination of the characteristics that Skoda thinks make up its e-mobility solution, such as innovative, intelligent, iconic and innovative, all paired with 'V' for vehicle. Now you know.

The Citigo E iV is built on the same platform as the regular small city car and is fitted with a 38.6kWh battery that is capable of delivering a driving range of up to 265 kilometres under the WLTP cycle. It uses a single 61kW electric motor and has a maximum torque output of 210Nm. That results in modest performance, making it ideal for urban driving. The top speed is just 130km/h, while 0-100km/h takes 12.5 seconds.

As the battery is located in the floor of the car, the Citigo E iV retains a 250-litre boot. Charging time to 80 per cent capacity takes one hour using a 40kW DC fast charger and the car's CCS connection. Charging to the same 80 per cent capacity from a 7.2kW AC public charger or home unit takes 4 hours and 8 minutes. It is also possible to charge it from a domestic three-pin plug, though this will take much longer.

Speaking at the introduction of the car, Skoda CEO, Bernhard Maier, said: "Today, Skoda is entering the era of e-mobility - a very special moment for the company, which will celebrate its 125th anniversary next year. Two models are kicking things off: our first all-electric model, the Citigo E iV, as the brands first step into the e-mobility era, and the Superb iV as the brand's first plug-in hybrid model."

Anything else?

The Skoda Citigo E iV is due to go on sale in the second half of this year, but there's no official confirmation yet as to whether the Citigo E iV will be available in Ireland. Elsewhere the car will be available only as a five-door model in Ambition and Style trim levels. It is distinguishable by its body-coloured radiator grille, while the front bumper is also redesigned. At the rear, it has a Citigo E iV badge on the tailgate.
