Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet preview

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet preview
S-Class aiming to become the most comfortable cabriolet in the world.

Following the reveal of the first official sketch of the long-hinted Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, the first official image has emerged ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. It will be the first time in 44 years that the Stuttgart car maker has offered its most luxurious model with a convertible roof.

Befitting of such a luxurious open-topped machine, Mercedes-Benz plans to ensure that its four occupants are kept as comfortable as possible. The front seats will feature the Airscarf heating system, which channels warm air from the front seat onto and around the neck of its occupant. In addition to the heated seats the S-Class Cabriolet will also feature heated armrests. Those in the rear will also be able to lounge in the comfort of heated seats.

Even with the roof stowed away under that long rear deck an advanced new climate control system has been designed to minimise discomfort. Called Aircap, this system works to protect the passengers from any excessive wind turbulence inside the cabin and has been designed to work like an invisible roof.

Keen to make a big impression with this new model, Ola Källenius, Board Member of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Car Sales, said: "The new S-Class Cabriolet symbolises our passion for individual and timelessly exclusive mobility, which we share with our customers".

Anything else?

We'll have to wait until next month's Frankfurt Motor Show to get all the technical details of the new S-Class Cabriolet but it is expected that all the engines from the S-Class Coupé will feature in the line-up. Expect this to start with the S 500's 4.7-litre V8 followed by the 5.5-litre V8 and 6.0-litre V12 in the AMG S 63 and S 65 models respectively.

There is also the possibility that Mercedes-Benz will give the S-Class Cabriolet the Maybach treatment, thus making it the first open-air model in this newly reinvigorated über-luxury sub-brand.
