First look at new MINI John Cooper Works

Details of the new MINI JCW released - it gets 231hp no less.

MINI has revealed details of the new production-ready John Cooper Works (JCW) model. It gets its own look and plenty of unique interior parts as well as the most powerful engine yet fitted to a production MINI.

Exterior

Nothing much has changed from the John Cooper Works Concept; the contours of the black wheel arch surrounds are designed specifically for the JCW and it also gains LED headlamps and daytime running lights. Rebel Green metallic paintwork is exclusively available on the John Cooper Works model and one of 11 colours offered on the model. A no-cost option is white, black or Chili Red paint for the roof and door mirrors.

Interior

The JCW gets sports seats with integral head restraints and black upholstery with red trim - a colour scheme that is continued throughout the interior. There are plenty of John Cooper Works parts inside the MINI to distinguish it from lesser models. Even the instruments get a unique look, with a dark dial for the speedometer and a white scale for engine speed.

Mechanicals

Power comes from a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 231hp. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and MINI quotes 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds; that figure drops to 6.1 seconds with the automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is 6.7 litres/100km (42.2mpg) for the manual or 5.7 litres/100km (49.6mpg) for the automatic with CO2 emissions of 155g/km and 133g/km respectively.

Sports suspension is standard, using single-joint struts at the front and a multi-link set up at the rear. Wheels are 17-inch alloys with 18-inch items available at extra cost. Brakes are by Brembo and there is a full range of electronic driver aids including stability and traction control plus Electronic Differential Lock Control. Torque Steer Compensation is built into the electromechanical power steering and adjustable dampers are another option.

Anything else?

The MINI John Cooper Works will go on sale in Ireland in late April 2015 at an on-the-road price of €36,180.
