Outlander PHEV gets conceptualised

Mitsubishi freshens up its clever EV SUV for Paris show.

Mitsubishi will show off a design study of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at Paris, called the Concept-S. If it gets a decent response, the company could offer it as a package for customers; more realistically, it's probably previewing the facelift destined for the production model.

Exterior
The Concept-S has had a fairly substantial facelift compared to the version you can buy in showrooms, with sleeker lights, plenty of chrome accents and revised (fake) air inlets at the outer edges of the bumper. Around the back are elongated combination light clusters that run from the boot into the rear wings - and more chrome. The whole lot is clothed in Platinum White paint, which has a glass-flake finish.

Interior
The cabin has also received a good going over, with a 'black and burgundy' colour scheme most evident. There's black woodgrain trim on the dash and door cards, while the centre console is said to be inspired by 'Japanese traditional black lacquered boxes'. The leather on the seats is hand-stitched and has contrast white piping.

Mechanicals
Based as it is on the Outlander PHEV, you get a 2.0-litre petrol engine and two electric motors, with the car always using its electric motors as the primary propulsion system; the engine is used as either an on-board generator or a 'drive back-up'. So if the Concept-S were to move, expect the same 0-100km/h time of 11 seconds, a top speed of 170km/h and some startling green credentials, which are 44g/km CO2 and 1.9 litres/100km (148mpg).

Anything else?
Mitsubishi will be displaying 11 vehicles in total at Paris, including the Outlander PHEV rally car that competed in the FIA Asia Cross Country Rally 2014, some European-spec production models and a variety of EVs, including the i-MiEV.
