Toyota i-TRIL and hot Yaris for Geneva

Toyota 212hp+ Yaris GRMN and funky i-TRIL electric concept to dominate Geneva stand.

What's the news?

This is a glimpse of Toyota's main attraction at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show - it's going to be called the i-TRIL Concept and it's an alternative urban mode of transport to city cars, other electric vehicles and motorcycles.

Electric-powered (natch), the i-TRIL is said to be 'aimed at people who want to have fun, even while driving at slow speeds around cities', and it also 'showcases numerous innovative aspects of Toyota's research into ever-better and more engaging environmentally friendly mobility solutions'.

Like any good, self-respecting electric vehicle today, Toyota says the i-TRIL is capable of operating autonomously - but, perhaps, more intriguing is what shape the Japanese machine will take on. Even from this obscure teaser shot, it's clear to see the i-TRIL is narrow and upright, and its name also hints at the number of people that can be carried on-board: three, in a one-plus-two seating layout.

That fact, coupled with Toyota's confirmation that it features Active Lean technology, makes us suspect it's going to be an evolution of the company's crackpot i-Road trike of a few years back. Which means we're eager to see what the i-TRIL looks like in the metal.

Anything else?

Actually, suggesting the i-TRIL is the company's main Geneva attraction does one of Toyota's other stand stars a disservice. The facelifted Yaris will also be on display, which isn't that exciting... until you realise Toyota is also going to introduce the hot version of its supermini to the world in Switzerland.

And we now know what this Yaris will be called - it's not going to be the RS, or the T-Sport, previous performance badges from Toyota. Nope, it will be badged the Yaris GRMN. Confused? It stands for 'Gazoo Racing Masters of Nurburgring', after the competition team which raced IS200s at the 2007 Nurburgring 24hr event, and which is now officially part of Toyota. The Yaris GRMN stands out in the compact hot hatch marketplace by offering a supercharged, not turbocharged, 1.8-litre engine, that the Japanese maker says will develop 'more than 212hp' in road-going trim. Impressive stuff.
