McLaren Super Series engine details

McLaren’s new twin-turbo V8 aims to deliver improved throttle response and aural excitement.

What's the news?

Ahead of the debut of its second-generation Super Series sportscar in Geneva next month, McLaren has revealed details of the new 4.0-litre V8 engine that will propel the car currently codenamed 'P14'. Featuring twin-scroll technology for its two turbochargers, the M840T unit is claimed to give improved throttle response, fuel economy and emissions in comparison to the old engine, while also pushing out more power and torque.

Exactly how much power and torque isn't yet known, but a 0-200km/h time of 7.8 seconds is quoted. That's major-league performance, and compares favourably to rivals like the Ferrari 488 GTB. If you happen to find yourself on a dragstrip, the quarter-mile dash can be dispensed with in a smidgeon over ten seconds. We can imagine Dominic Toretto being rather pleased with that...

One criticism of the outgoing 3.8-litre engine centred on its slightly monotonous voice, so McLaren has focused on producing a more interesting exhaust note by optimising the harmonics. A sports exhaust option is also available, presumably suited to those who enjoy rattling nearby windows upon start-up.

The engine bay also illuminates when the car is unlocked, highlighting the McLaren 'Speedmark' logo on the cast-aluminium intake plenum. More details of the new car's performance specifications will be revealed in Geneva on March 7th, along with a first proper look at the new styling and carbon tub construction.
