BMW’s new 5 Series kinda-sorta scoops itself

New remote 360-degree view feature shows first undisguised pic of the new 5 Series.

What's the news?

OK, don't get too excited yet. Yes, BMW has released an undisguised photo of the next generation 5 Series saloon, but it's not going to be the full-detail, 1080p hi-def view you were expecting. Instead, it's this slightly grainy shot shown on someone's mobile of a top-down view of the new 5 as BMW shows off its new Remote View 3D system ahead of the 5 Series' unveiling at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

No Paris debut? No, BMW is reserving Paris for the new X2 crossover.

That's about all we know for sure for now. BMW hasn't actually revealed anything about the new 3D system other than to say that now you can "always know what is happening around your vehicle" and we can surmise that it uses the 360-degree camera parking system to send images of what's going on next to or near your car to your phone.

We'll find out more for sure in January.
