Latest addition to the ranks of plug-in hybrid vehicles is the Kia Optima PHEV.

What's the news?

Kia unveiled its first plug-in hybrid car, the Optima PHEV, at the Chicago Auto Show. The initial information relates to the U.S. market; Kia has not said whether the plug-in hybrid will come to Europe.

Exterior

There are styling changes to distinguish the PHEV; a new front air dam, bevelled rear bumper and 'Eco Plug-In' badges. An active radiator grille improves aerodynamics helping towards the 0.24 drag coefficient.

Mechanicals

Power comes from a 154ps, 2.0-litre, direct-injection petrol engine that driving through a six-speed automatic transmission. Electric propulsion is provided by a 50kW electric motor attached to the gearbox. A 9.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack gives an estimated range of 27 miles in full electric mode. A full charge takes less than three hours via a 240-volt electrical supply.

To encourage efficient driving an Eco-DAS (Driving Assistance System) is fitted. This includes Kia's first coasting guide; coaching the driver on when to coast and brake via an icon in the instrument panel and an audible alert.

Anything else?

The battery pack is fitted behind the rear seat and in the spare tyre well; Kia claims the Optima PHEV has one of the largest boots in its sector. The location of the batteries hasn't prevented the fitment of a 60/40 split folding rear seat.
