Do you know what? I really didn't want to like the Golf R. Why would you want to spend €50,000 on a dicreet Golf that has 70 more horsepower than the €36,000 GTi?

Yes, this is an enormous amount of money to spend on a Volkswagen Golf, which most people will barely look twice at on the street. But the thing is, that this is perhaps the beauty of this car. It is wonderful because of its discretion. Around town the DSG transmission is a breeze and on the motorway, if you want to…
We got the new Ford Focus together with its arch rival, the Volkswagen Golf for a brief twin test. In summary, the Focus is more daring in terms of styling inside and out and it's marginally better to drive. That latter point really depends on what version you're looking at though, as the Zetec models feature sportier suspension settings than the rest of the line-up.

The Focus' interior has moved on a lot in terms of quality, though it's a little overstyled in my opinion. The Golf's is simpler and some might say boring,…
We've got hold of a Volkswagen Golf for a few months to live with it every day. In some ways it's a more realistic test of a car than our usual week-long loans. Paddy will be the 'owner' of the car most of the time, but I'll be getting behind the wheel regularly too to give a second opinion.
Our car is the BlueMotion model, which is the most fuel efficient Golf available. It's not difficult to spot some of the modifications made in the name of efficiency. It sits lower for a start…
Alright, I admit that winter tyres may not have been necessary as yet, though I did feel vilified in having them fitted to our long term test Golf when the temperature plummeted to zero in the middle of December. Then it decided to come back up to a balmier 14 degrees around Christmas Day...
Still, it's only the first week of January and many are predicting cold weather and snow for later this month.

However, I'm not as ready as I was, as one of the tyres suffered a puncture before the holidays. Annoyingly,…
We regularly bang on about winter tyres and their merits so we've put our money where our mouths are this year and fitted a set of Bridgestone winter rubber to all four wheels of the CompleteCar.ie Golf BlueMotion. It gave us an excuse to have the car cleaned again too. It's so easy to take one of the few permanent cars in the household for granted when there are so many shiny new models passing through our hands.

Have to admit that the clean has really brought up the paintwork and though the Golf…
When advising buyers what car to go for, one of the first things we ask them is how they'll use it. While Irish drivers are obsessed with diesel power at the moment, petrol cars can make sense depending on your circumstances, especially if you're going for a small car and you don't plan on astronomical annual mileages. Likewise, petrol-electric hybrids are suited more to a city life than one in which you pound the motorways.

So, where does our Golf BlueMotion fit in? Well, in truth, it's driven in and around Dublin city the…
There's no doubt that, if fuel economy is your top priority and you're a high-mileage driver, then the BlueMotion version of the Golf is the car for you. The official combined consumption figure is 3.8 litres/100km (74.3mpg) and it gets pretty close to that. We're consistently amazed by its ability to avoid fill-ups, even when confined to the environs of Dublin. On the motorway it's peerless.

Though it's not quite peerless, as Volkswagen offers the same 1.6-litre TDI engine in the rest of the Golf range. Sure, you do without a list of further…
While enthusiasts' desires are tempered a bit right now by economic reality, there are still some fabulous performance cars on the market. Irish buyers tend to veer toward hot hatches, as they're relatively affordable and practical despite giant-slaying performance. Once upon a time all hot hatches were comparable, but now there's a range of options, from the likes of the warm (but still great) Suzuki Swift Sport to the bonkers stuff like Ford's Focus RS and the new Audi RS 3.
Then there's the Volkswagen Golf R. It doesn't immediately stand out, despite the…
Hyundai's assault on the new car market has gathered pace and the Korean brand's renaissance has meant that the firm looks set to become a top-five seller by 2013. Back in 2007 Hyundai had 3.67 per cent market share but was mainly selling Santa Fes and Tuscon SUVs, with its more mainstream models not really making much of a dent against the heavy-hitters of Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen.

Hyundai Veloster: on sale in January
Both fast-forward to 2011 and the brand has reinvented itself and with the arrival of the i40 Tourer and i40…
I had the lovely new Audi A6 on test last week. Cracking car. It was the 2.0 TDI model, which will undoubtedly be the biggest seller here and it's a decent alternative to the BMW 520d.
Anyway, I drove it to Ennis to the in-laws and got their point of view. Their opinions matter for several reasons (not just because I have to be nice to them...). First up, my brother-in-law drives the previous generation Audi A6 (see below in the background).

Naturally he loved the new car. A few things he noticed in…
Having spent several months at the wheel of the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion, and then with the Golf Edition-R, it's time to move on. Our next long term test car will be a SEAT Exeo, but before that arrives we have the recently updated Volkswagen Touran for a few weeks. You can read our full road test of the Touran here, and we're going to take this opportunity to compare it to living with a Golf. We suspect that's a decision some growing families will have to make.

First up, and despite cosmetic revisions at…
Recent research commissioned by tyre specialists Kwik Fit has shown that more than half of motorists could not change their own wheel if they got a puncture.
Of those surveyed, 36 per cent of respondents said they had both the spare wheel and the tools required to change a flat tyre but not the knowledge. A further 10 per cent carry the spare but not the tools, while six per cent had neither the equipment nor the knowledge to make a swap. Most worryingly, three per cent, or roughly 54,000 motorists, had no kind of provision in place.
Before we start this comparison, let's be clear about one thing: very few buyers are interested in high-end SUVs in Ireland right now. The numbers say it all: in 2007, 5,079 premium SUVs were sold here, featuring 624 Land Cruisers and 261 Touaregs. Last year (2010), the sobering figures say 638, 39 and 3 respectively.
Now that's been said, how do the relatively new Land Cruiser and Touareg stack up against each other?
We don't think the price will be the deciding factor here, though the 3.0 TDI Touareg is a few grand…

It all happened by accident. I was supposed to collect the Seat Ibiza ST, a car which sounds like it has performance potential, but is really just a Seat Ibiza Estate, which Shane had driven before anyway. But when I showed up at Seat's Liffey Valley headquarters, the Ibiza had gone AWOL and the Leon 1.6 TDi was offered by way of a replacement.

It had been quite a while since I had driven a Leon. Probably because it is a long time…
In case you didn't notice, our news pages have been dominated with stories from Auto Shanghai and the New York Auto Show this week.

The latter only really kicks off today so there'll be more to read later, but before that, here's the list of interesting unveils in China:
It is said that revenge is a dish best served cold and after a twenty five year wait it couldn't really be any colder.
In 1986, Auto, Mund und Sport (the German equivalent of Autocar) tested the technological tour-de-force that was the Porsche 959 and achieved a top speed of 197mph, making the 959 the fastest street-legal production car in the world. Posters were plastered all over bedroom walls and a young Boris Becker rushed out to purchase one of the 200 road-going versions of the car that was primarily built for Group B racing.
Acura/Honda

One of the most talked about cars of the show was the Acura NSX concept. Acura is Honda's North American luxury/sports division and so it got to show off the new car on its stand. Fear not, it'll be sold as the Honda NSX when it eventually reaches the showroom - by 2014 we reckon. Looks like it'll have about 400hp from its hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. The Acura RDX SUV and ILX saloon also on the stand were all but ignored.
It's been relatively quiet on the news front today, though we have a couple of interesting stories accompanied by dark and moody studio photographs that are all the rage.
First up is the stunning Peugeot SxC (see what they did there?) concept. Despite appearances this SUV is about the size of a Volkswagen Touareg and it may even go into production. The bad news? It may only be for the Chinese market. Link to the full story below the image.

Three hundred and thirty three. That's how many A1 quattros Audi will build. That's not including this rather innocuous red example we spotted at the A1 quattro's launch. It's incomprehensible that Audi has spent all that time and effort squeezing a four-wheel drive transmission into its smallest model for such a tiny production run. And it has admitted as much.

Sources claim that four quattro-equipped A1s were built over two years ago for appraisal by management. Unlike this red A1, and the 333 production examples, the development cars borrowed their engines from the Volkswagen…
Three Sub €10,000 Family saloons
The family saloon makes up the staple diet of Irish car buying and we have chosen three good value cars here, all great value because they are petrol powered.
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5 Intense €9,950
The latest Mitsubishi Lancer is an impressive car, so we were delighted to see that now you can get into a 2008 model for under €10,000, which is really very good value. The Lancer feels feel built, is entertaining to drive and the engines are reliable. Plus, lately, they have been better equipped with lots of standard equipment thrown in.…
The Renault Scenic has enjoyed bursts of popularity on the Irish market over the years and for a while was the default choice in the seven-seater category. But once more mainstream players such as Ford and Toyota started upping their interest in this segment, twinned with some shoddy build and reliability from the Renaults, the Scenic’s popularity began to wane. We must admit it had been quite a while since we spent any time in a Renault Scenic, but what with Renault’s new-found popularity thanks to giveaway prices, and a new gearbox offering in the Scenic we decided it was…
Monday mornings are usually a bit slow in the motoring world, but there are a few bits and pieces to look at today. The most relevant news to Irish new car buyers is the revealing of SEAT's new five-door Mii.

Just like its Volkswagen up! and Skoda Citigo cousins it's little different to the three-door option, other than an extra pair of doors, naturally. That makes it easier to get into the rear seats and hence it'll be the best-selling version.

Actually, SEAT Ireland hasn't confirmed whether or…
With the price of oil getting higher by the day and the Government seemingly intent on taxing motorists off the road, downsizing is the latest trend to hit the motoring world. Ford recently unveiled the 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine that will power the top selling Focus and the Volkswagen Group is busy with its up!/Mii/Citigo trio that offers big-car feel in miniscule little bodies. But have we not seen that before?
After World War 2 the Japanese authorities introduced the Kei-jishoda regulations to light a fire under the beleaguered manufacturers and give the population a cheaper way to get on…
The Cobo Center opens its doors wide to the media on January 9 for the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Here's a preview:
Acura
Honda's luxury US division will use the North American International Auto Show to debut a new ILX concept saloon. The Honda Civic-based four-door saloon will be available with either a 2.0- or 2.4-litre four pot or the Civic Hybrid's powertrain (in America only).
A near-production ready second-generation RDX crossover will also be displayed that noticeably, in an automotive world dominated by downsizing, will swap the turbocharged four-cylinder engine of old for a more fuel efficient V6.
The…

SEAT is not one of the big car brands in Ireland. Just 1,763 new SEATs found homes in Ireland in 2011 and the company's best year recently was 2007, with 3,346 cars sold. Half the problem is that its models are not sufficiently differentiated from other Volkswagen Group cars, while here in Ireland most buyers are probably just not very aware of the brand.

That's a shame, as SEAT has always tried to add a little Latin passion to the Group's proven competence. It doesn't go far enough…
Ever wondered why Google has invested so much time and money in its Street View technologies? Amazingly, the California-based company did not send a fleet of camera cars around the world so you could spy on your neighbour or search for those elusive oddities like alfresco fornication on a college campus. Instead, the technology forms the backbone of Google's driverless car software.

Unless you have been living under a stone recently the Google Cars (as they have become known) are big news and even bigger over the last day or two with the announcement…
